February 2017 – Dave Owens, Life Skills Direct Care Staff

Dave has been with The Arc of Gibson County for nearly 8 years. The Life Skills Director nominated Dave and said “Dave is not just staff to the consumers, he makes a great male role model for them. He is always willing to help the consumers reach their goals and is a great teacher. Dave strives to include the consumers in everything staff does to expand their knowledge and skill set.”

What brought you to The Arc of Gibson County?

A desire for a little extra income to make payments for a new RV trailer.

What do you like most about your job?

Being an expansion of resources for the total “team”.

Who’s your role model?

My late Uncle Ralph, the greatest, kindest man to ever walk the face of the earth.

What’s one thing not many people know about you?

I am a bagpiper. I am also a Navy Veteran “Neuropsychiatric Technician” and attended school on the 55th floor of the form World Trade Center Twin Towers in NYC.

What’s your favorite thing about working at The Arc of Gibson County?

The overriding sense of and expressed appreciation from our consumers.

What have you gained from working at The Arc of Gibson County?

The sense of giving back to the community.

What are 3 words you’d use to describe The Arc of Gibson County?

Ministry – Therapeutic – Community

What’s your favorite memory from The Arc of Gibson County?

The many thematic parties and dances!

An advice for current / new staff?

Consumers, like all of us, do not like to be “managed” but respond positively to good leadership, so lead rather than manage.
